"default": "This drink was named after the 1922 Rudolf Valentino film of the same name. It's a silent movie about a bullfighter, which explains the blood and sand connection. Exactly who invented the drink is not known, but the first time the recipe was printed, like so many other drinks, was in the 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book. The drink calls for equal parts scotch, cherry brandy, sweet vermouth, and orange juice, which are not ingredients that one would imagine to pair nicely. Indeed, it would seem that the bartender responsible committed the cardinal sin of combining liquids by color, rather than flavor, since the vermouth and cherry brandy are both red (blood) and the scotch and orange juice are both orange (sand). Luckily it worked."
