"default": "This drink was the product of the long-since-demolished Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on Manhattan Island. It was first mixed in the hotel's Empire Room (the main restaurant) sometime around the turn of the 20th century by bartender Johnnie Solon, most likely as an antidote to more boozy drinks like the Martini and Manhattan. This Spanish-American war veteran claimed not to have named the drink after the New York borough, but after the newly opened Bronx Zoo. The drink was a real hit at the time, especially on warmer days and where a spot of daytime refreshment was in order. The drink has fallen out of fashion of late but as a mid-afternoon alternative to Pimm's and lemonade, or a white wine spritzer, the Bronx has the potential to shine (and it's in those situations that I suggest you mix one.)"
