    "default": "The Old Fashioned epitomises the original definition of a cocktail: spirit, sugar, water, and bitters. The act of adding a bittersweet edge to a normal glass of bourbon transforms the liquid into something very special indeed. Some people like to use granulated sugar in this drink for reasons of authenticity, but it can become a little frustrating trying to get it to dissolve in a cold alcoholic drink, so I opt for sugar syrup. Some bartenders insist on muddling fruit (cherry, orange... even pineapple!) in their Old Fashioned glasses. I wholly admonish this approach—it ruins the appearance and doesn't benefit the flavor. The Old Fashioned is a perfectly simple, reassuringly strong drink, not a fruit salad. If you like fruit, eat it for breakfast."
