"default": "Rob Roy Macgregor was an early 18th-century outlaw and, by all accounts, the Scottish version of Robin Hood. In 1894, around 150 years after \"Red Robert\" died, the story of his life was made into an operetta by the American composer Reginald De Koven. During the late 19th century, it was common for drinks to be created in honor of new musicals or plays. This cocktail is thought to have been created at the Waldorf Hotel in New York, just around the corner from Herald Square, where the Rob Roy show first opened. The recipe calls for orange bitters instead of Manhattan's Angostura or Boker's bitters. This adds a slightly fresher note that, depending on what Scotch you use, can do a fantastic job of brightening the drink and avoiding the sticky-sweet-spice-bog that Manhattans sometimes slip in to."
